Plot A, Mountfield Industrial Estate

Colin Jones working with Blueprint Projects
Industrial landscapes rarely get the luxury of ecological depth. Plot A at Mountfield Industrial Estate began as a purely functional brief: a softscape scheme to wrap around haulage yards and unit frontages. Space was tight, planting zones were minimal, and the budget was modest.
Halfway through, the brief shifted. A biodiversity plan was requested, reshaping the scheme into something richer and more purposeful. Working with Blueprint Projects, we reimagined the planting palette to bring pockets of habitat into an otherwise hard-surfaced environment.
Hawthorn hedging now threads along boundaries, offering both seasonal interest and shelter for wildlife. Swathes of native wildflower meadow punctuate the open edges, providing nectar sources for pollinators from spring through to late summer. Habitat enhancements — from bird boxes to pollinator-friendly species — were carefully positioned to work with the site’s movement patterns and operational needs.
It is not grand in scale, but it is proof that even small industrial plots can play their part in the ecological network — and that biodiversity has a place in the most unlikely corners

Small spaces, big purpose — weaving native planting into the edges, turning overlooked margins into thriving threads of habitat.

Strength in connection — each strand holding firm, each twist shaping the whole. A landscape, like a rope, is only as strong as the way its elements bind together.
